“SAVE OUR NATION” THROUGH BHRF XIV

Save Our Nation!!

That’s the theme for Borneo Hard Rock Festival (BHRF) XIV in this year. Borneo Hard Rock Festival will be held on 28 – 29 of November 2008 in Auditorium Untan. The winner of this event get Turning Thropy from Danrem 121/ABW, Permanent thropy, the Best Players, the most Favorite Band and getting millions rupiah.

It is the great event that makes English Student Association (ESA) members and even West Kalimantan Society proud of it since this is one and the only Hard Rock music competition in Pontianak.

Borneo Hard Rock Festival has long-life history since it was held in 1994. Borneo Hard Rock Festival began in 1994 on 21 – 22 December, which of the leader was Abdullah Thahir. Then, Borneo Hard Rock Festival II in 1995 was lead by Achmad Muharam. Asep Mulyadi, next became the leader of BHRF III. In 1999, again, ESA held BHRF which was lead by Jaka Mulyana. These recently festivals, Borneo Hard Rock Festival XI in 2005 was lead by Hasanudin, then Adrianus lead Borneo Hard Rock Festival XII in 2006. And last year Borneo Hard Rock Festival XIII was lead by Boris Pasaribu.

Danrem 121 / ABW always give support for Borneo Hard Rock Festival since the first until fourteenth Borneo Hard rock Festival by giving Turning Thropy.

The committe of Borneo Hard Rock Festival XIV has given the certain songs which should be sung by the finalist in BHRF event. These songs are song from Skid Row, Extreme, Deep Purple, Rainbow, and Megadeth. The finalist must have the high creativity and skills to rearrange the traditional music with certain songs. Therefore, the songs will be played in the event. Besides, the finalist is supposed to be able to play the certain songs in English. That is one of the characteristic of Borneo Hard Rock Festival itself.

Borneo Hard Rock Festival is one of the annually event of Executive Board of English Student Association (ESA) FKIP Untan, in the division of Event Organizing. The purpose of BHRF is to implement “Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi”. It is also the place for appreciating English through music, developing the ability of West Kalimantan musicians, and especially in BHRF XIV sending the message “Save Our Nation” to the loved-music in West Kalimantan.

In Borneo Hard Rock Festival, the fluency and accuracy of vocalist in singing the song have the big part in scoring. Besides, the juries also score the group bands performance in the stage, the skill of playing the instrument, harmonisation and balancing of the group band.

The big hope for Borneo Hard Rock Festival is developing the conciousity of the society in West Kalimantan about how importance the togetherness in this country. As long as we know, the togetherness is starting to lose in this life now. The hope is not only for developing the togetherness, but also making the chance for the potential Hard Rock bands to be the best musicians.

Phyto-plankton, the winner of BHRV XIII

What’s in your mind when first hear: Phytoplankton? Some of you maybe will think about the microscopic plants that live in the ocean. You are not totally wrong, anyway.

Phyto-plankton is the name of a local band. As the meaning of phytoplankton, this band hopes to be able being just like a real phytoplankton, very important to the ocean and to the whole planet! They are at the base of the food chain. Many small fish and whales eat them. Then bigger fish eat the little fish, etc. The food chain continues and at some point in time we (people) come into it when we eat the fish. So the energy of plankton becomes our energy too!

Phyto-plankton was formed in Pontianak in 2006. This band consists of Hanif as the vocalist, Heri as the first guitaris, Guntur as the second guitaris, Rudi as the bassist, Oscar as the keyboardist, and I’il as the drummer. In their daily activity, they are doing different kinds of roles. Some are private-workers; there are also still college and senior high school student. The diversity makes them understand each another and commit to have one vision for their band: a stairway to be a rock star.

Since the first this band was formed in December 2006, it has already won so many music contests. They were the finalist of Gudang Garam Rock Competition in regional scope in 2007. In the same year, they won festival expo of Kalbar Fair 2007 as the first winner. Popularizing their name, again they became the first winner of Freestyle Merah Putih, the first winner of modern rock religi, the third winner of Asean Beat in West Kalimantan region, the first winner of Rock United Festival Pronelis, and absolutely the first winner of Borneo Hard Rock Festival 2007.

They do not stop there in making achievements. 2008 is also their year. In Musik Kampus 2008, they were selected as one of twelve best bands. They also successfully won the indie festival named oikosnomos, as the first winner. Too many achievements to mention. One thing for sure is Phyto-plankton will never stop to try to be the best. As Rudi said, “We will always try our best. For this coming BHRF, we are trying to keep our spirit, as we keep to still being the winner”.

GETTING CLOSER WITH HARD ROCK BAND

Claiming that you are the hard-lover of hard rock? If you do really love hard rock music, it will not be complete before you notice who are the singers, as well as the band playing hard rock music, especially those which will be sung in Borneo Hard Rock Festival XIV next Friday and Saturday. It could be some of the bands and singers as listed below are your very favorite ones!

Well, after doing some consideration, finally the committee of BHRF XIV decided 15 songs which the participant must play on the stafe. They are Dafne - Mighty Wings, Soldier of Fortune from Loudness, Iron Maiden - The Trooper, Megadeth - In My Darkest Hour, Extreme - Get the Funk out, Dio - Holy Diver, Whitesnake - Fool for Your Loving, Deep Purple - '69, Motley Crue - Take Me to the Top, Skid Row - The Threat, HammerFall - Stronger Than All, Rainbow - Black Masquerade, UFO - Mother Mary, Freak Kitchen - Taste My Fist, and Symphony X – Fallen.

Extreme

Extreme today consists of Gary Cherone as the lead vocal, Nuno Bettencourt as the lead guitar and backing vocal, Pat Badger as the bassist and backing vocal, and Kevin Figueredo as the drummer and percussion player. Non hardrock lover may know them from their song More Than Love which is remade and sung by some other singes such as Westlife and Frankie J. Extreme reformed for a short tour in 2004 playing in their hometown Boston at the WAAF anniversary as well as a few concerts in Japan and Azores. After a hiatus during 2005, the band returned in 2006 with the "classic" Pornograffitti line-up to do a small three-show reunion tour in New England.

On November 26, 2007, the band announced plans for a world tour during Summer 2008 with King's X as well as a release date and label for the new album, Saudades de Rock, produced by Bettencourt. Kevin Figueiredo, who played with Bettencourt in DramaGods and Satellite Party, took over drum duties. Original drummer Paul Geary is still involved with the band albeit in a management position. Singles from the album have been available on MySpace including "Star". The release dates of the CD were July 28, 2008 for France, August 4, 2008 for Europe, and August 12, 2008 for the USA.

Deep Purple

Deep Purple is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981. The band was founded by bass guitarist Nikki Sixx (who was, at the time, in a band called London) and drummer Tommy Lee, who were later joined by guitarist Mick Mars and singer Vince Neil. Mötley Crüe has sold over 40 million album copies worldwide.

Mötley Crüe had announced that sometime in 2009 is the possible release date for the movie, The Dirt, based on the book written by Mötley Crüe and Neil Strauss. Rumors about the cast of characters in this movie include Christopher Walken as the famous rock and roll star Ozzy Osbourne and Val Kilmer as David Lee Roth. Motley Crue have recently announced their 2009 "Saints of Los Angeles" Tour. Supporting them will be Hinder, Theory of a Deadman, and The Last Vegas.
