Listening is Easy!!!
Okay, first I want to talk about the reason why I write this. As far as I’ve known, Listening always be a subject that feared by most of students, even English students. That’s why I decide to share some tips of my own to all of you dear readers. There are only two secrets that I have to help you in Listening subject, self-confidence and practice.
Self-confidence, as I’ve mentioned above, Listening is a subject that feared by most students. It may seem not important but in fact it holds an important key indeed. I usually found that most students will always afraid when it comes to Listening session, therefore they’ll started to lose their confidence and believe they will fail. This is a bad habit and should be changed. We MUST believe that we can do it first. As quoted from Henry Ford, “Whether you believe you can’t, or whether you believe you can… you are absolutely right!”. It means when we are afraid of Listening and believe we can’t do it then we will started to panic and keep thinking about “Ahh, it is too difficult” which resulted instead focus to the tape we are not listening at all. That’s why we have to believe that we can do it, then we will stay calmed and focus to the tape. I’ve always do this and it works some magic for me in Listening sessions and other occasions. So self-confidence is also important to work out the Listening sessions.
Practice, it always be a key to success in everything we do and it including Listening subject. The way to practice Listening is of course by listening a lot. It doesn’t have to be the Listening subject materials, whether it just listening to songs, movies dialogues, or radio. The best way that I find really helped is by listening to songs while reading the lyrics in accordance with the songs. This way you’ll make yourself familiar with the pronunciations of the words because while you read the words you also hear how the words are pronounced.
The other way to practice is by trying to use contextual or grammatical means, this is particularly useful when it comes to “Fill The Blank” listening sessions. For example, “The train leave … 10 o’clock.” You already know the answer right? The answer will be “at” even if you can’t hear it because there is no other word will fit in the blank contextually and grammatically. But do not rely on this too much, what’s the point to listen and how you will improve your skills if you always rely on this?
I guess that’s all I can share with you. Hopefully it will be any help for you readers in improving your Listening skills and passing the Listening subject.
